Breaking Curses

The first thing to do when dealing with a curse is to break its power over your life. Just like the words which brought the curse on your life to begin with, your words also have power to release it. In the name of Jesus, take authority over that curse, and be specific. Then expose it as a lie and break its power over you.

If you’re dealing with a curse of failure, say something like, “In the name of Jesus, I take authority over the curse that I will always be a failure and that I will never amount to anything. I see now that this was a lie, and I break its power over my life.”

When you say these things, it’s best if you can say them out loud. There’s an authority in speaking things out loud that changes the atmosphere. There is power in your words, so say it boldly. Declare your freedom.

And once you break the power of a curse in your life, it’s important that you replace it with a blessing. Replace the lies with God’s truth and bring life into that place which was so full of death and destruction. Usually, this truth will come from Scripture, though sometimes it’s simply remembering a promise that God has spoken over you directly.

If your curse was “I’m ugly,” speak Psalm 139:14 over yourself that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, a marvelous creation. If your curse was “I’m a failure,” remind yourself that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13). If it was “I’m not loveable,” remind yourself that God loves you so much that He sent His only Son to die for you (John 3:16) or read Deuteronomy 23:5 where God “turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you.”

Again, speak this out loud. Words have such power, and hearing them with your own ears has multiplied impact over just thinking them.

Once you’ve broken the lie and replaced it with truth, you’re free. Have faith in the truth you declared over yourself and walk believing it in place of the lie. You may not notice a difference right away, but then again you may feel completely changed. Either way, you’ll soon discover that you’re walking with new freedom and confidence in who God created you to be, and you’ll be past the roadblock, ready to follow God through the next steps.

If, however, you continue to struggle with a curse, don’t back down. Keep tearing down the false belief and declaring the truth over yourself. Write God’s truth about the curse on a piece of paper and place it somewhere that you will see often, or even set it as a reminder to pop up on your cell phone or your computer. Keep the truth in front of you and keep declaring it over your life. Soon, the curse will be replaced by the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).
